Studio Brandt participated in the IDS 2022 Prototype exhibit with a collection of rugs entitled ReRug.
A passion for rugs and all things natural, organic and recycled lead to exploration of different materials which can be used to manufacture rugs. The original motivation for participating in this exhibit was to find ways to manufacture rugs from recycled materials. Originally we wanted to include rugs made from recycled denim and other natural materials. What was found more easily accessible was yarns made from recycled plastic bottles (PET). Two of the samples in the exhibit are made from recycled PET yarns. The yarns are soft and the samples feel similar to other synthetic carpets made to mimic the feeling of wool. During the process we realized that while a rug made from recycled plastic is a good way to reduce landfill waste of plastics in our environment, it still doesn't eliminate plastics around us in our everyday life which can be harmful to our health due to the large amounts of microplastics being found within our environment. This lead us back to thinking that the best materials for manufacturing rugs will always be to use only 100% all natural materials such as wool, silk and cotton. Better yet to use non-toxic, organic materials where possible. So this exhibit features wool and silk rugs - handtufted and handknotted. Non-toxic organic cotton mats, and rugs made from recycled materials such as bamboo silk (synthetic) and plastic bottles (PET). Contact for more details and how to order. [email protected] |
